May Favorites

This month has been full of ups and downs; beginnings and endings. I had my last 'firsts' and left my high school career behind. In the chaos of graduations and ceremonies, I used a handful of products that are truly fantastic.

I picked up the Boscia Makeup Breakup Cool Cleansing Oil a couple of weeks ago after I ran out of my favorite one from The Body Shop. The oil isn't necessarily cooling but it feels smooth and silky on the skin. It thoroughly removes all traces of makeup including waterproof liner and mascara with just a pump and a half! I purchased the half ounce travel sized bottle to test out and I will definitely be picking up the full size! The L'Occitane Verbena Cooling Hand Cream Gel (I'm sensing a 'cooling' theme going on here) is a matte hand cream that really packs in the hydration. I never used hand creams, but I've been learning that moisture is key in order to keep youthful looking hands. This one is perfect for hot summer days because of its thin consistency and powdery finish. I'm bringing out my favorite Laura Mercier Oil Free Tinted Moisturizer in the shade Ochre, which is perfect for hot days in the sun. The SPF 20 in the product allows it to be buildable throughout the day while providing decent coverage. I love to slap this on before I go to the beach or to hang out with friends so that I protect my skin and look a bit more polished! The Urban Decay Perversion Mascara has been the only mascara I've used for the past few months. It adds the most insane volume and length to my lashes without looking fake or overly-clumpy. I love how black my eyelashes look when I'm wearing this mascara and on no-makeup-makeup days I pop on a bit of this, some foundation, and a smudge of lipstick before I'm out the door! Last but not least is my favorite spring/summer lip color in the form of the Revlon Colorburst Balm Stain in Honey. This balm is lightweight but packs a punch of pigment on the lips. The color is a soft pink that looks natural and pretty for everyday. It has an average 1-2 hour lasting power but the texture and color make up for the lack of staying power!

Fitness: Yoga With Adriene

After completing my last year of PE at Kamehameha, I took a well-deserved break from grueling exercises and runs. I've run countless miles, swam laps in the pool, and worked on intense cardio, so I decided to rest for a little while. To make up for my recent lack of outdoor recreation, I've been using online fitness routines from Blogilates and Yoga with Adriene.

The latter appeared in my subscription box as a recommendation from Anna, who's exercised with Adriene for the past year or so. Adriene is a yoga teacher and actress from Austin, Texas who hosts weekly yoga sessions online. Her knack for stretching, breathing exercises, and complicated poses makes her the perfect YouTube yoga host. I've been enjoying her core workouts and the other higher difficulty workouts because they make me work hard and sweat without completely destroying my muscles. Who knew yoga could be so hard?

The Graduate

After nine years at Kamehameha, I finally graduated! I've had many highs and lows at KS and I'm incredibly grateful for the friendships I've made and opportunities I've experienced. I wouldn't be the person I am today without my family and friends and am thankful for Ke Ali‘i Pauahi and the school in general. Even though I didn't always have the best of times, I'm a better person because of everything I've gone through and I'm excited for the journey ahead!

Summer Espadrilles

Summer Espadrilles

Christian Louboutin platform sandals / Aquazzura black shoes / Aquazzura leather shoes / Tory Burch evening shoes / Chiara Ferragni flat shoes / Vince platform shoes / Aquazzura sandals / Castañer wedges shoes / Joe's Jeans high heel shoes / J Crew slip on sneaker / High heel shoes

When it comes to the high temperatures and loose clothing that the summer time brings, I tend to reach for woven sandals and flats instead of leather footwear. Espadrilles are comfortable and stylish when paired with denim shorts and a tank top. They allow the feet to cool down in the sun while still looking chic and "of-the-moment". I'm in love with the neutral Chanel slip ons in the middle row but could go for any espadrille in the summer heat!

The Last Band Banquet

My last ever high school band event took place a few days ago at school. The band banquet was held at the Ka‘iwakīloumoku Cultural Center and it was such a fun night with my friends! I've made some amazing friendships and memories in band and although I'm excited to move on to a new journey, I will miss being around these special people. I wore a crisp black and white dress from Saturday paired with my favorite Nine West pumps.

The Beach Bum Beauty Bag

In the past, I never liked going to the beach- the sand stuck to every crevice, the salt water would rush up my nose, and I'm deathly afraid of fish/sharks/anything that swims. Despite my previous hatred of the ocean, I've been swimming (and kind of surfing) a lot lately! When I go the beach I make sure to have a pouch of beauty goodies that I can depend on when my hair is sticky and my naked face is exposed.

I always have sunscreen with me no matter what I'm doing in the daytime. The one I like to use right now is the Clinique Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Sunscreen. This is a face and body cream that protects and covers my skin so that I don't develop melanoma or intense burns. I make sure to reapply my sunscreen throughout the day so I can tan rather than burn. To keep my skin natural but with a hint of coverage, I add the Laura Mercier Oil-Free Tinted Moisturizer in the shade Ochre. The base has a light coverage but looks like I'm not wearing anything while protecting my face. I dab a bit of the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer in Custard on any excess redness or blemishes to keep my skin looking flawless without products caked on. Bobby pins are a must in any ocean-related recreational activities to keep my hair out of my face. The Secret pH Balanced Antiperspirant keeps me smelling nice and feeling fresh all day, even if I haven't found a shower. The Bare Minerals Marvelous Moxie Lipgloss is lightweight and lasts on the lips without the need for touchups.

Oboe

One of my main goals this year was to teach myself how to play the Oboe for band. After months of waiting for the only instrument to be fixed, I picked it up two weeks before our first concert and taught myself the fingerings and notes every day and night. During my free periods I would practice and when I got home, I would work on the fundamentals for hours. Those two weeks of work were grueling and exhausting but I think I picked it up quite quickly. I really love the Oboe and have enjoyed playing it for the past five months. Hopefully I will be able to play it in college and in the rest of my life!

Vlogging Camera Shopping

After watching countless 'vlogs' on YouTube, I've decided to purchase a vlogging camera of my own. Vlogging, also known as video blogging, has become quite popular on Vimeo and YouTube because it allows audiences to view real life situations that internet stars go through. From mundane day-to-day activities such as grocery shopping to exciting beauty launches and concerts, vlogging takes viewers on memorable trips that allow them to feel like they are in the same situation as their favorite star. As I will be traveling quite frequently this summer, I want to purchase a point and shoot camera that has excellent video quality and is portable. I'm currently switching between the Canon S120 and the Canon G7X.

The Last Day

I know that pretty much all of my posts this month have been about my last experiences in high school rather than my usual fashion or beauty write up, but I want to be realistic and share what I've been going through for the past few weeks. School has been consistently stressful and frustrating for a while and although I'm sad to leave my friends behind as I move forward in life, I'm really excited to start on my new journey. After nine years at my school eating the same food, seeing the same people, doing the same work, etc, it's nice to have a fresh start.

I checked out of school today with one of my closest friends. It's been a long and tiring process that forced me to run around campus looking for money, my i.d., and a jacket to cover up my non-dress-code outfit, I'm finally done. Graduating will be one of my most precious accomplishments and I can't wait for Sunday!

White Stripes

This could possibly be my favorite outfit I've ever worn. I found both the blouse and skirt at Nordstrom for amazing prices. The blouse has a subtle striped pattern and a flowy style while the sleeves are oversized and billow in the wind. Tucked into the tight miniskirt, the top doesn't look too big or dramatic for an everyday look. The skirt is beautiful and despite its length, it's quite wearable. The combination of blue and white in this outfit makes it perfect for the quickly approaching summer time!

The Senior Picnic

A few weeks ago my classmates and I had our "senior ditch day" at Kailua Beach. Every year, the school allows the senior class to spend a day at the beach where they can swim, surf, eat, and hang out with their classmates before graduation approaches. Although I'm not a huge fan of the beach, I had fun spending time with my friends and having a picnic during school hours. This post is really late but I wanted to share some of my favorite memories with all of you!

Book Club | May 2015

Last month I read my way through The Best American Poetry and it was fantastic. I've been really interested in poetry this year because of my English class and this book is filled with beautiful words and stories. One of my favorite poems in the book is called "You Art A Scholar, Horatio, Speak To It" by Olena Kalytiak Davis. It features a dialogue between (seemingly) two people and the almost Shakespearean language feels light. I enjoy reading books that are told by different narrators and have multiple story lines in it, which is why an anthology of poems is perfect for me.

This month, I'll be reading Everything Is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer. There are four overlapping storylines in the book and although it's an assignment for English, I've been thoroughly enjoying it!
